They had an on and off relationship, until they decided to get married. While filming The Grudge in Japan, she bought her husband a unique present for his birthday, a Japanese katana sword. Sarah Michelle Gellar had to obtain a special clearance in order to remove the sword from Japan, and after eventually succeeding, she stated that it was an incredibly hard thing to do.

Besides starring in movies, Sarah Michelle Gellar is also involved in charitable organizations, including the Breast Cancer Research Centre, Project Angel Food, Habitat for Humanity and CARE. Because of her versatility, talent and commitment she has won so far fourteen different awards and has twenty five nominations.
